###### Ricardo Mañé - Selected

Collected Mathematical Papers

This volume presents selected papers by the brilliant Uruguayan mathematician Ricardo Mañé, known for his outstanding contributions to dynamical systems and ergodic theory. He was a student of Jacob Palis at IMPA and pursued his whole scientific career at IMPA. Mañé was invited to speak twice in the section of Ordinary Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems, at the International Congress of Mathematics held in Warsaw in 1983 and in Zurich in 1994. He was also a speaker at the Colloquium organized by the Societé Mathématique de France, celebrating R. Thom’s 65 anniversary. In 1994, he became a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and was awarded the Third World Academy of Sciences Prize for Mathematics.

Collected Mathematical Papers

The famous equation that bears Erwin Schrodinger's name encapsulates his profound contributions to quantum mechanics using wave mechanics. This third, augmented edition of his papers on the topic contains the six original, famous papers in which Schrodinger created and developed the subject of wave mechanics as published in the original edition.

###### Michael Atiyah: Collected Works: Volume 1: Early Papers; General Papers Volume 1: Early Papers; General Papers (Oxford Science

Collected Mathematical Papers

One of the greatest mathematicians in the world, Michael Atiyah has earned numerous honors, including a Fields Medal, the mathematical equivalent of the Nobel Prize. While the focus of his work has been in the areas of algebraic geometry and topology, he has also participated in research with theoretical physicists. For the first time, these volumes bring together Atiyah's collected papers--both monographs and collaborative works-- including those dealing with mathematical education and current topics of research such as K-theory and gauge theory. The volumes are organized thematically. They will be of great interest to research mathematicians, theoretical physicists, and graduate students in these areas.

Collected Mathematical Papers

This volume contains almost all mathematical papers published between 1943 and 1984 of Igor R. Shafarevich. They appear in English translations (with two exceptions, which are in French and German), some of the papers have been translated into English especially for this edition. Notes by Shafarevich at the end of the volume contain corrections and remarks on the subsequent development of the subjects considered in the papers. Igor R. Shafarevich has made a big impact on mathematics. He has worked in the fields of algebra, algebraic number theory, algebraic geometry and arithmetic algebraic geometry. His papers reflect his broad interests and include topics such as the proof of the general reciprocity law, the realization of groups as Galois groups of number fields, class field towers, algebraic surfaces (in particular K3 surfaces), elliptic curves, and finiteness results on abelian varieties, algebraic curves over number fields and lie algebras.

Collected Mathematical Papers

From the Preface: "The longest paper in volume 1 is "On the Theory of the Syzygetic Relations of two Rational Integral Functions, comprising an application to the Theory of Sturm's Functions", and to this many of the shorter papers in the volume are contributory ... the volume contains also Sylvester's dialytic method of elimination, his Essay on Canonical Forms, and early investigations in the theory of Invariants. It also contains celebrated theorems as to Determinants and investigations as to the Transformation of Quadratic Forms and the recognition of the Invariant factors of a matrix."

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Collected Mathematical Papers

From the Quarterly Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics, vol. xix. (1883), pp. 122.] THE present memoir is based upon Mr Warren sE xercises inC urvilinear and Normal Coordinates, Camb. Phil. Trans, t. xn. (1877), pp. 455 502, and has for a principal object the establishment of the six differential equations of the second order corresponding to his six equations for normal coordinates: but the notation is different; the results are more general, inasmuch as I use throughout general curvilinear coordinates instead of his normal coordinates; and as regards my six equations for general curvilinear coordinates, the terms containing differential coefficients of the first order are presented under a different form. If the position of a point in space is determined by the rectangular coordinates x, y, zthen p, q, rbeing each of them a given function of x, y, z, we have conversely x, y, z, each of them a given function of p, q, r, which are thus in effect coordinates serving to determine the position of the point, and are called curvilinear coordinates. But it is not in the first instance necessary to regard x, y, zas rectangular coordinates, or even as Cartesian coordinates at all; we are simply concerned with the two sets of variables x, y, zand p, q, r, each variable of the one set ...
