Ivory Lacquer Finish

Fukui Prefecture, on the west coast of the main island of Honshu in Japan, is home to Wakasa-nuri, or Wakasa lacquer ware. Production of Wakasa-nuri, known as one of the finest types of lacquer ware crafted in Japan, began in the early Edo period and has a tradition of over 400 years. This pair of chopsticks is crafted by Wakasa-nuri artisans in a simple but elegant traditional style to highlight the fine lacquer. Using bamboo from the Kumamoto area, artisans first cut, shape and finish the chopsticks to size. Then, several layers of an ivory-tinted lacquer are applied, with a period of drying and then polishing between each layer. The result is a soft, satin glow that is synonymous with classic Japanese lacquer ware. Hand wash only.
