Spohr Clarinet Concerto

The Clarinet Concerto in c minor of 1809 is the very first work by Louis Spohr to grace our catalogue. The first in a series of four concertos written by Spohr for the virtuoso Johann Simon Hermstedt has lost nothing of its romantic magic and belongs to the standard repertoire of every clarinettist. Besides taking a close look at the Leipzig first edition of 1812, our edition reassesses Spohr's autograph score for the first time: after it was rediscovered, it was possible to do away with many imprecisions and irregularities found in earlier editions. Christoph Sobanski's new piano reduction wonderfully fits the hands.

Spohr Clarinet Concerto

- Composer Ludwig Spohr was an early proponent of Romanticism in music and an often innovative composer - These four concerti are cornerstones of the clarinet literature - Clarinetist Maria du Toit, a gifted and exciting musician, is smartly supported in these new recordings by South Africa's finest orchestra, the Cape Philharmonic, directed by Arjan Tien.

Spohr Clarinet Concerto

(Music Minus One). Ludwig Spohr, who created quite a stir when he began conducting with an odd contraption known as a baton, was also one of the best known violinists of his day (i.e., the first half of the nineteenth century), and is primarily known today for his concerti and other solo works for the fiddle. That he was also quite adept at writing for other instruments than his own is proved by this C-minor Clarinet Concerto, his first of four such works, and a composition high on wit and solid craftsmanship. Includes a high-quality printed music score for B-flat clarinet and a digitally remastered compact disc containing a complete version with soloist, then a second recording of the orchestral accompaniment, minus the soloist; and a second compact disc featuring the complete version again, followed by a -20% slow-tempo accompaniment for practice purposes. Performed by Collete Galante, clarinet Accompaniment: Stuttgart Festival Orchestra Conductor: Emil Kahn

Spohr Clarinet Concerto

Many of the composers in this set wrote for the clarinet at times when the orchestral status and design of the instrument were still in transition: the 18th century saw the gradual establishment of the clarinet as a more-or-less standard orchestral feature, its range being continually expanded in parallel. Of course, nobody was more aware of these evolutions than clarinettists themselves, who are represented here by two instrumentalistcomposers, the Swedish-Finnish Bernhard Crusell, whose three concertos make use of the clarinets full range, and Heinrich Baermann, the dedicatee of Webers works blessed with a wonderful personal idiom. Other names which may be less familiar to listeners include Charles Villiers Stanford, a leading figure in the late-19th-century renaissance of British music who is often overshadowed by Elgar and Vaughan Williams, and Julius Rietz, most closely associated with Mendelssohn, both of whom contribute concertos with clear influences (Brahms and Mendelssohn respectively) that still retain their individuality. Mendelssohn himself is not often associated with the clarinet, but features here via his Concert Pieces for clarinet, basset horn and piano, alongside other unexpected figures such as Rossini and Mercadante (both better known for their operas) and Fr...

Spohr Clarinet Concerto

Spohr Clarinet Concerto - The San Francisco Ballet's 1998-99 season included a ballet by Helgi Tomasson called CRISS-CROSS. By combining works of Scarlatti and Schoenberg, it highlights both the past and future of ballet. The Schoenberg work is his Concerto for String Quartet based on Handel's concerto grosso Op. 6 no. 7, itself a blending of old and new. For this recording, the SF Ballet's Orchestra and the Lark Quartet prefaced the Schoenberg with the Handel, and added two other works for string quartet and orchestra. The Handel here may be a little too meaty for ears accustomed to smaller, period-instrument performances, but it is not overly weighty and provides excellent preparation for Schoenberg's take on it. Presented together, they seem almost a single work in which, on repetition, the music is transformed as if seen through a prism. The performances here are quite good; both the quartet and the orchestra sound as committed to Schoenberg as to Handel. Spohr and Elgar benefit from similarly commendable readings. Jean-Louis LeRoux leads the program with an audible understanding of the works not only as concert music but as music for dancing.
