Tomahawk Flying Tigers

The Flying Tigers are an epic story and deserve and epic design, so I tried to capture that. I hope you feel that I succeeded. Of course the shark mouthed P-40 Tomahawk is the symbol of their courage and free wheeling ways so this design celebrates both.

Tomahawk Flying Tigers

For most of World War II, the mention of Japan's island stronghold sent shudders through thousands of Allied airmen. Some called it “Fortress Rabaul,” an apt name for the headquarters of the Imperial Japanese forces in the Southwest Pacific. Author Bruce Gamble chronicles Rabaul’s crucial role in Japanese operations in the Southwest Pacific. Millions of square feet of housing and storage facilities supported a hundred thousand soldiers and naval personnel. Simpson Harbor and the airfields were the focus of hundreds of missions by American air forces. Winner of the "Gold Medal" (Military Writers Society of America) and "Editor's Choice Award" (Stone & Stone Second World War Books), Fortress Rabaul details a critical and, until now, little understood chapter in the history of World War II.

Tomahawk Flying Tigers

In December 1941, the Japanese Imperial Army came ashore on the British colony of Malaya. In support of that invasion, its air arm soon began to raid neighboring Burma and especially its seaport and capital city of Rangoon, protected by a weak squadron of Royal Air Force Brewster Buffaloes and an untested squadron of P-40s flown by the American Volunteer Group of mercenary pilots in the employ of China. The battle of Rangoon would soon make them famous as the "Flying Tigers." Beginning in 1942 and at regular intervals thereafter, the Tigers' exploits in Burma would be hailed in the west as a triumph of outnumbered men and obsolete machine against overwhelming odds--"like rowboats against the Spanish Armada," in the words of one historian. But what was the truth of these air battles? In the course of writing his definitive history of the American Volunteer Group, journalist and historian Daniel Ford spent a year translating Japanese documents, histories, and popular memoirs of the air war in Southeast Asia. Here for the first time is the Japanese side of that great battle, as it is remembered in Japan to this day. Essential reading for every fan of the Flying Tigers. (About 20,000 words)

Tomahawk Flying Tigers - Academy P-40C
Academy P-40C "Tomahawk"

Tomahawk Flying Tigers

1/48 Scale model kit of the Curtiss P-40, a World War II era American single-seat, single engine fighter aircraft. Coined the "Warhawk" by the U.S. Army Air Corps, the P-40 was also called the "Tomahawk" and the "Kittyhawk" by the British and the Soviet Union, who also operated the P-40 during the Second World War. The P-40 was a rugged and heavy aircraft with excellent dive performance, which earned it the nickname "Lead Sled" and made it a good ground-attack platform as well. Although the P-40 lacks maneuverability at low speeds when comparing to the Japanese Zero, pilots who flew the P-40 held their own against the Japanese Zero by flying to the Warhawk's strengths in dogfights. Claire Chennault's AVG Flying Tigers achieved spectacular results flying the P-40 during the early stages of the War in the Pacific and help the "Warhawk" achieve immortality in aviation history. This 1/48 scale assembly kit by Academy depicts the P-40C production model flown by the 1st American Volunteer Group (AVG) of the Chinese Air Force ("Flying Tigers") in 1941 and 1942, and the kit feautres detailed cockpit & interior, fully engraved panel lines & rivet details, and optional form of canopy & landing gear included.

Tomahawk Flying Tigers

This DVD is about the incredible "Curtiss P-40 Warhawk". Prior to WW2 the Army was looking for a new fighter. The P-36 was very impressive to the Army but it had a radial engine. Curtiss installed a Allison inline engine and thus the P-40 Warhawk was born and just in the nick of time. Although it was great for it's time, it was no match for the Famous Japanese Zero. That did not bother the AVGs in China, they used tactics to shoot down a record number of the enemy. The trick was not to "dog fight" with the enemy. The P-40 eventually served in all fronts during WW2.1st Film: "How to fly the P-40 Warhawk". This is a great film created by Curtiss Aircraft CO. for the US Army as a training film and has another title called "Ways of the Warhawk". RT 29 Min2nd Film: "AVGs, The Flying Tigers". This is a collection of film newsreels and stories on the Famous AVGs in China. RT 12 Min 3rd Film: "Flutter".
